The Winter Solstice signifies a closure or end of the annual passage of time, and simultaneously the beginning of a new year. Recognition of the ‘return of cycles’ has long been important to the human population on planet earth. This annual cycle is that of the earth relative to the Sun, which the ancients perceived as the Solar year. The other bodies in the solar system each have their own cycles which create interesting variations from year to year and century to century.
Teachers from ages past would observe the night skies and record happenings on earth that coincided with what they saw in the sky as a way of understanding our place in the cosmos and our relationship with luminaries closest to the earth which effect the life cycles here. One such notable event was the bright nova or exploding star that became visible several years before Jesus of Nazareth was born. Men of great learning from Babylonia, Persia, and Ethiopia interpreted this new light in the sky as a portent to great changes in the state of men. The celestial event is also recorded in Chinese and western hemisphere documents of the time.
What is documented historically, is that at the time, the Mediterranean area was in a state of complete turmoil and chaos as groups warred with groups, refugees were relocated or annihilated, and death by famine and disease were common. This cycle of destruction might have been alleviated if people in positions of authority had taken the advice of wise men. The celestial occurrence could have been seen as a moment of opportunity to change priorities and to work towards peace and equality. Great holy men have continued to teach these ideals down through the ages.
An ancient school of thought called astrology teaches that some years may seem more tumultuous than others because of the influence of solar system planetary bodies and celestial subtle energies striking the planet earth. The purpose of recording cycles in the heavens is in part to prepare for hard times before becoming devastated by them. In modern times, scientists record solar flares and radical explosions on the sun which are then correlated to the cycles of warlike activities of the human population and environmental changes.
So we bring to a close 2008 c.e. which has been globally as intense a twelve month cycle as predicted. The significance of a moment in time takes on a whole new perspective when personal experience is seen relative to what others are experiencing in the same cycle of time. Throughout the year we have noted aspects among the planetary bodies and luminaries in the solar system. For the American people, the opposition between Saturn (structure and status quo) and Uranus (revolutionary change) which occurred on November 4th, election day, marks a significant change in how equality and discrimination are perceived. This national election of monumental importance culminated most dramatically and blessedly, peacefully.
The end of November and beginning of December has been a time of a series of multiple conjunctions as the Moon came into First Quarter Phase and passed by the planets clustered in Sagittarius and Capricorn Constellations. The 1st of December the crescent Moon appeared close to Jupiter and Venus at twilight, a romantic image before setting in the west. The annual cycle of rotation of Jupiter around the Sun is 11.86 earth years. As the orbit of Venus around the Sun is 243 earth days, this apparent proximity does not occur every year in the same part of the sky during the same season. The sight was a gift of beauty and hope after the tension of so many previous months.
The Sun is also transiting Sagittarius and Capricorn at this time of year, causing a dynamic particular to the year 2008. On the 21st of December, the Sun moves into the constellation Capricorn bringing its annual journey to a close at Winter Solstice. The planets Mercury and Mars will remain close to the Sun and continue to be invisible during the daylight hours.
On physical and metaphysical levels the dominant occurrence is the conjunction of the Sun at Solstice with the planet Pluto, as from our perspective on Earth, they both enter the constellation of Capricorn simultaneously. According to astrological sources, Capricorn is considered an Earth Sign. In classic science, there are four basic elements; earth, water, fire and air. The qualities of each element alter the expression of energies aligned with any specific sign of the zodiac, which reflects existing planetary and celestial relationships and happenings on Earth. That after 13 years in a sign of fire, Sagittarius, Pluto is entering Capricorn, a sign of earth on Solstice with the Sun, is perceived as highly significant.
Although Pluto’s existence was predicted in the late 1800’s through observations of the irregularities of the obits of Uranus and Neptune, actual confirmation is granted to the Harvard Observatory in 1919 and more completely verified by the Lowell Observatory in 1930. The suggested premise is that Pluto is an escaped satellite of Neptune. There is later evidence that Pluto is in a synchronized orbit with a moon more than a fourth its own size and therefore could be categorized as a double planet. This partner is currently named Charon. (A similar relationship occurs between Earth and its Moon although the ratio in mass is substantially different.) That Pluto and Charon are revolving around one another may contribute to the extended duration time it takes to orbit the Sun. Pluto entered Sagittarius in January 1995 and for 13 earth years has remained in that area of the sky. The projection with current data is that Pluto will travel through Capricorn, hovering there until March 2023 when it will pass on to Aquarius.
In ancient times through observation for thousands of years, five major planets in this system were recognized and charted as they traveled through the stars. In 1761, Sir John Herschel found Uranus, and in 1846 Neptune was identified by the calculations of Adams and Leverrier. This does not mean they were not a part of the solar system before that time. Subtle energies from these planetary bodies have been effecting the other planets and perhaps even patterns on Earth for eons of time.
Hanukkah begins on the 22nd of December in accordance with Hebrew law, relative to lunar cycles. This date is punctuated by also being the height of the Ursids Meteor Shower which occurs between the 17th and 24th. As the Earth passes through this local area of space annually, the Ursids is one of several noted principle meteor showers making this season an exciting time to watch night skies.
Venus and Neptune are conjunct on December 27th and although Neptune is invisible to the eye, we can imagine its being close to the brilliant Venus in the constellation Aquarius. The aspects between planets through the signs of the zodiac have always been open to interpretation and influence on human behavior. Astrologers specialize in these possible translations.
As we pause to catch our breath and regain our balance individually and collectively around the planet, let us evaluate the challenges we have faced and what we have accomplished in our own lives this year past. They may include health, loss, finances, abrupt changes in lifestyles and relationships. This Winter Solstice is a time of reflection on the previous 12 months and a projection of potentials into the future. Hopefully we are stronger and more prepared for a new year. Take the time to share with friends the gaiety of the season along with the deep meaning of memories.
In the coming years Pluto and its partner Charon will be prominent especially this time of year with its mystery and magnetism. As the planet farthest from the Sun, it is on the doorstep to outer space and new adventures in the 21st century on Earth.
BLESSINGS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS

THE PRISM DIARY
This is an excerpt from the Prism Diary. Although names may have been changed to protect the privacy of those involved, the circumstances are accurately recorded.
This episode occurred late October 1984. The author is published internationally in transcultural and spiritual publications. She is a clairvoyant.
FOG’S END
The autumn was growing long after the Hunters’ Full Moon and I found myself becoming restless as if some instinct was driving me to find a winter shelter from the northwest winter cold. And yet, some urgency nibbled at the edge of my mind. Returning from an afternoon walk to find an enigmatic message from a caller I had never heard of sent a shiver down my spine. The voice was that of an older woman laced with desperation. Realizing unpleasantness would be involved, it was with reluctance that I called her back later that evening.
The name she gave was McGuire, good Scottish stock. She was a designer of women’s garments. My name had been given to her by a gentleman she had known for years in Hollywood. She needed help with a situation that was rapidly deteriorating as days passed. It was apparent that whatever was troubling her, she did not understand enough to put into words. She related her story in a helter- skelter fashion, not knowing where to begin or what might be of significance.
“Can you sew?” she asked and then switched subjects to metaphysics without a connector phrase, and then leapt to the topic of grandchildren, as one would expect from a grandmother. I told her I would call the following day to let her know if it would be possible for me to be of assistance. The conversation was abruptly cut short as she dashed to some unidentified task of urgency.
Perhaps because of the muddled exchange, her anxiety seemed more real. She lived some distance south; it would take three maybe five days traveling to get there. She had offered me food and lodging for the duration of my stay. As I sat piecing together her nonsequitur comments, it became clear that she had not been entirely candid about her situation. There was something she had left unsaid on purpose. What it could be was only speculation. I fell asleep thinking more information could only be uncovered on the site. The decision to take the case had been made.
Although the woman seemed more forthcoming and congenial by the light of day, the undertones of distress remained in her voice while we spoke Sunday morning. “Everything has turned topsy-turvy. Nothing stays where I put it and there are strange happenings in the night!” Madame McGuire was most relieved when I told her I was on my way.
There was no way of telling how long I would be gone or what I would need. Better plan for weeks. I wondered what I was getting myself into this time…
A clear if chill Monday morning greeted me as I departed. Time on the road allowed me to think. The information was scanty, but when analyzed, certain facts came to the fore. Among strands of a conversation which had lasted twenty minutes, these repeated phrases rang in my mind: “I can’t get any work done! My business is falling apart.” This woman had been a garment designer in Beverly Hills. In the 1960’s and ‘70’s, famous folk musicians had worn her clothing. She still had an impressive clientele.
As I continued south on the fourth day, the weather turned for the worse. I had taken the coastal highway for the view, only to find myself surrounded by low clouds and drizzle, gloomy and damp. Looking at the calendar, I realized the day was All Hallow’s Eve, and my thoughts meandered with the road back in time to stories of rituals of the season; gatherings for protection from unseen forces. The concept of pathways between the world of the living and the world of the dead came to mind. In the old religions time had been set aside when autumn met winter, to honor the ancestors. Modern times still included some of the old ways, in some cultures more than others. Shamans had warned me of the ease with which disembodied spirits could draw on those in the flesh at this time of year.
The drizzle turned to mist and began to close in on me. Images of wraiths wafted between matter and illusion in the swirls of air. Time to stop. I pulled the car of the road, and stepped out to touch the wet soil. Pipe and tobacco in hand I headed for a secluded spot and made offerings and prayers for good passage. The power of the earth flowed through me grounding and strengthening my bond with Gaia, Earth Goddess. After a few minutes, replenished and restored I felt at peace.
Even as the feeling of urgency threw me towards my destination, delays confronted me. A road block, a detour; then more than one. I had intended to arrive early afternoon. The days were growing shorter and arrival in daylight would be preferable in an unfamiliar area. Struggling through impasse after impasse, late into the day, the priority of reaching my goal became paramount. Weariness set in and with it a depression I did not like the feel of, crept in as if someone or something did not wish me well. And then darkness fell.
Mrs. McGuire had said, “Take the road up the valley; the road beside the river going down to the sea.” Feeling my way, guided by some sixth sense, I found it and headed inland. The fog thickened and visibility became nonexistent. Shapes unseen until the last possible moment leapt out of the murk as headlights swung around curves. Huge tree forms loomed unexpectedly over the road, momentarily illuminated before being enclosed in mist once again. The road led on and on. Eventually I realized the dirt turnoff I sought must be behind me. I felt disoriented. A cluster of buildings up ahead suggested civilization and with a sigh of relief, I headed to a roadside phonebooth. My hostess answered expectantly and gave me clear directions from my current location. I had wasted time in the fog and now needed to backtrack with all speed.
Something did not want me to find that house. It had consciousness and was expecting me. I swerved to miss an oncoming vehicle in my lane and barely had time to right my course before careening into the ditch. With trepidation and hands that were a little shaky, I turned onto a dirt lane which must be the one. It twisted up the hillside and at last, at its end, a stone wall with a tall wrought iron gate came into view. A metal sculpture of four horses galloping head first through the wall guarded the gateway very formidably against intruders For better or worse, I had arrived.
The iron gate was locked but I found a small door in the wall and crept through into the cobbled courtyard in the pitch dark. Stumbling up unlit steps I passed through archways of stone toward a dim light I could just make out through tangles of hanging vines, now dormant. At last I reached a door. I knocked not wanting to imagine what might greet me. After what seemed an extended period of time, I could hear shuffling footsteps and eventually discerned through the glass, a figure silhouetted from behind, coming down a long dark hallway. Lighting sconces as she approached, a woman unlatched the door, which creaked on old hinges.
She stood stooping slightly, an apparition out of an ancient fairey tale; wide as she was tall, a short older woman with a face once handsome, now lined with worry and ravages of a hard life. Her clothing was handwoven and could have been that of a healer in medieval times, in shades of earth tones loosely hung as if hastily put on. Her grey shoulder length hair had not been combed adding to the abstracted though not unkindly impression. “Ah, here finally…its about time. You had trouble finding the place? Well then, come in come in.” With no further introduction than that, she turned back the way she had come expecting me to close and lock the door behind me before following.
“The fog is never this bad, but with everything else that has gone on here recently, can’t say it’s a surprise on this night. The power went out earlier today, normally the courtyard is lit”. I could see now she walked with a limp and asked about it. “Oh, that, slipped and fell two days ago on the wet stones, just a bruise really… haven’t slept for a week or more.”
My nose began to discern edible smells. As we approached a comparatively lighted area, caldrons and pots of various sizes boiling and bubbling on a large wood burning stove became visible. My stomach long since neglected began to respond loudly. “My gosh, you must be expecting a crowd tonight…looks like a lot of food!”
“The cats you know—I have to feed the cats.” All I could immediately see was one gigantic solid gray animal peering at me with huge golden eyes. He perched on a counter top as still as a statue, guarding the kitchen. For several minutes the woman busied herself with huge battered metal platters and ladles, scooping out fish heads, turnips and roots, and bones of indistinguishable origins. As this strange woman stepped out into the night, she was inundated by a swarm of cats jumping from roofs, out of trees, through bushes, and from behind rocks. Maybe fifty or more cats of all sizes and colors crowded around the feast she set on the patio before them. “Aren’t they pretty!” she exclaimed with a sweet smile. I had to agree, I had never seen anything like it.
As we stepped back inside, I looked up to notice a second floor landing suspended over the kitchen. Something looked out of place but I couldn’t decide what. “Are There rooms up there?”, I queried.
“Sure. The staircase collapsed about 5 days ago. Fortunately nobody was hurt. Now we have to go out the front door and walk around to get in through the upper hall. I was using a ladder but somehow that’s disappeared.”
I stared into the space where the staircase had been, organizing all this information in my head. Some strangeness could be written off as eccentricity. In my work I ran into all kinds of people with unusual ideas and ways. But mishaps were piling up, and that was different. This felt like evil. That something was very wrong here was becoming glaringly evident by the moment. But what? I extended my perception seeking answers to the disarray. I scanned the scene without being able to identify the cause.
The woman mentioned that her daughter had come to visit for a month or so. The daughter and grandson had gone out trick or treating earlier in the evening and she expected them anytime. I could feel her reluctance to share information about family as I had sensed on the phone before. She was scared and she was leaving something important out of the conversation.
Time was slipping by, it was long past ten o’clock and if what I guessed was correct, the next hours would be critical. We were both edgy; perhaps a premonition of impending crisis was threading into our subconscious. I knew I was at a vortex of chaos. All the difficulty finding the place and the other signs led to this location. But I still had yet to find what I was looking for…the source. I became more wary as the minutes ticked by. The old woman babbled on about any number of things she thought might interest me, to distract us both from the tension we felt.
While outwardly appearing to listen and chop vegetables, I wove a shield of energy not only around myself, but around the room and then extended that weaving to include the dwelling, strengthening layer upon layer of protection. Master teachers had taught me about discarnates and what could happen when the doors opened between dimensions. Suddenly the hairs rose on the back of my neck and I turned to face the danger. I looked up to see what appeared to be a blond girl child draped around the banister leading into space. Her posture was unnatural. As I looked more acutely, she aged to be actually in her early forties. But what riveted my attention were her eyes. They were at that moment huge and bottomless pits of dark evil. For an instant the entity lurking behind them surged forward to challenge, knowing me as a threat. I had recognized it for what it was.
An ancient and vile being from the lower astral plane had somehow gained access to this poor woman’s body. It enjoyed wreaking havoc within the human being it held for ransom which showed with every gesture. The pain and confusion caused in any immediate environment were a great amusement to it as well.
In a state of full alert, I dropped everything and focused on the immediate need. I called upon the Powers of Light in the vicinity to dispel that which did not belong. This is what I was seeking. This is why I had been called here. It was a wonder the daughter had survived. It was a miracle the house was still standing. The problem was as I had begun to suspect….POSSESSION.
As I gazed into this poor trapped soul, I could see both beings struggling for control in the body of the one. Speaking softly, taking care not to arouse the intruding discarnate to violence, I asked the daughter to come join us. With an unnatural spark her eyes glanced at the floor beneath her as if she considered leaping to harm. “Please take care, your mother has prepared a lovely feast”, I cajoled, “you must be hungry…I sure am.” Magically, the missing ladder appeared from the landing beside her and she descended.
We held hands in a circle in prayer before consuming the food. As we sat in the light of many candles and spoke of truth, beauty, and love, we continued on telling stories of adventures and sharing the good food. Suddenly, a dangerous angry glitter flashed in the eyes of the possessed, as the uninvited entity there realized it no longer had control and could not remain within the physical body. Identified and unwelcome, it withdrew with a lurch and a moan; the woman collapsed in a heap. I held her there guarding over her to ensure the unwanted spirit did not try to return. Without anywhere to gain hold, the wicked creature departed after swirling around the room bouncing off the walls until it found an escape through a crack in a window. Prayers had protected everyone present.
The clock struck midnight. As if a veil had been lifted, the house was flooded inside and out with lights as the electricity came on. The grandson, a boy of ten, laughed as we continued our very late supper. We retired eventually and slept peacefully the night through. I had perhaps arrived late, but blessedly early enough. All Saints Day dawned shining and new.
Epilogue: This case of possession is an example of an all too common occurrence. The woman had a history of causing damage wherever she went. At the University in Berkeley years before, she had participated in experiments involving hallucinogenic and psychotropic substances. Supposedly these were supervised by certain faculty members, renowned for research in these psychological explorations. That proper guidance and shielding techniques were known or used is doubtful. In scientific experimentation, seldom are such precautions taken.
In this case, no one had considered the possibility that a discarnate entity had taken over when the woman had been in a vulnerable and highly suggestive state, and never left. As in many similar instances, the lifestyle had deteriorated over a long period of time; the individual soul being less and less in control of her behavior.
Eventually, a distorted co-dependent relationship was built as neither the invested soul nor the intruding entity desired to forfeit possession of the lifeform. This is not an uncommon occurrence.
Although over the next few months that I was able to monitor the situation, substantial improvement became apparent, damage caused by self destructive tendencies and nurtured by the discarnate over years could not be completely erased. The woman would have a shortened lifespan.
In cultures familiar with altered states induced to promote spiritual experiences, skilled adept individuals are present and conduct specific rituals to prevent crisis situations and prolonged discarnate contact which can be harmful.
A word to the wise: Recreational use of psychotropic substances little understood, without guidance or focus can cause irreversible even terminal damage to body and soul. Seek out knowledgeable sources who can teach inexperienced initiates the required preparations before embarking on a quest of unknown dimensions.

AUTUMNAL EQUINOX: SEPTEMBER 2008
As the seasons turn day by day and summer slips into autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun appears to cross over the earth’s equator on its journey southward. Daylight and nighttime share equally the 24 hours of the day with 12 hours of each all over the globe. Equinox means ‘equal night’. At the vernal equinox the same thing happens only in reverse, as the Sun appears to travel northward. And so, year after year, century after century as the planet Earth follows its orbit around the Sun, spinning on its axis of rotation in these timeless cycles, the seasons change.
Many exciting relationships are occurring among the planets of the solar system this autumn around the equinox. Early in September, many of the planets have already gathered in Libra to welcome the Sun. Mercury, Venus and Mars are clustered together in the constellation of Libra and remain in varying degrees of conjunction from September 6th through the 23rd when Venus dances ahead leaving the others behind. At Equinox, on the 22nd, the Sun leaves the last degrees of the constellation Virgo and enters Libra to join these planets. All this happens during daylight hours and as the sun is close-by, can not be easily observed.
Meanwhile in the opposite part of the sky in the constellation Aries, the glorious full moon rises on the 15th of September. The autumn full moon closest to the Equinox is called the Harvest Moon because the moon rises above the eastern horizon just as the sun is setting in the west, providing extended hours of light. This time has always been used by human beings to complete the harvesting of crops before the weather changes. From this day on, the days become shorter and the sun’s rays are less strong in the northern hemisphere.
In ancient days the food would be divided among families and members of the community or stored in a safe place for the dry, cold winter when no food could be grown. This is a time of preparation; gathering crops, repairing tools and homes, and collecting wondering herds left to graze all summer. In most cultures, the Autumn Equinox is celebrated especially if the harvest is good. And if not, the elders plan how best to survive the days ahead until the spring comes and a new growing season can begin.
Interestingly this year, the solar equinox occurs as the lunar cycle begins its third quarter on the 22nd marking the halfway point between the full moon on September 15th and the new moon on the 29th. This is a perfect symbolic reflection of the time of the year; as typically the third quarter of the moon signifies a time for trimming away no longer needed materials and organizing what is kept for the future.
If we choose to accept the concept of subtle energies in relationships we see in the planets of the solar system, we can be more attuned to events and attitudes in our lives. Recognizing Libra as the zodiac sign of the Balance or Scales, we understand that at harvest time, bartering, and selling crops and livestock is a natural preoccupation at this time of year. Hence symbolic of these seasonal transactions the Sun is perceived to enter the heavenly constellation of Libra denoting fairness in business transactions and relationships.
That the planets Mercury, Venus, and Mars are also in Libra bring an emphasis to the characteristics of good conversation and friendship, perhaps even romance in the afterglow of summer. Jupiter and Saturn are in harmony in a trine aspect suggesting prosperity through preparation for more serious times; a subtle overtone this season. Each of us can use these energies to our benefit and well being by being attuned to what are natural responses in the cycles of time.
Many people enjoy the season of change, hiking by day as the weather is pleasant and autumn begins. The evenings are still warm and the stars are bright. Get outside with family and friends to find stars and constellations. See how lucky we are to be on this beautiful Earth!

Register to VOTE in the Primary Election September 2. 2008
VOTE in the General Election on November 4, 2008
Democracy by definition is a government in which the people hold the ruling power either directly or through elected representatives. A democracy is founded on the active participation of individuals making up the population. The powers upon which the system is based must be exercised by the citizens in order to be maintained. Likewise, in a bureaucracy made up of agencies, councils and committees, the base of action is still the votes of the people at large.
The representatives, local, regional, and national all are elected by constituents or citizens making up the voting elective. Only by participating in the process can citizens express their views and therefore have a voice in the decisions. One can not abstain and then criticize the system. To withdraw from actively expressing one’s opinions is a factor in the breakdown the democratic system. A person can either step forward to actively fill a municipal or legislative position, or support someone who shares similar concerns and will honestly act to make changes for the greater good.
If politicians currently in office do not address the views of the citizens on social services, responsible use of available resources, or international relations, it is the obligation of the individuals in the voting populace to participate in electing officials who will respond to the needs of the people.
To ensure these rights of expression are not taken away by power hungry warmongers, it is most important to be courageous enough to stand up for our, freedoms as active citizens of the United States of America. Educate ourselves about issues and candidates. To maintain our rights, register to vote by complying with the simple requirements. Once we are registered voters, this is a free election and we can make our choices on election day.
THE BILL OF RIGHTS is the name by which the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution are known. They were introduced by James Madison to the First United States Congress in 1789 as a series of constitutional amendments and came into effect on December 15, 1791 when they had been ratified by three fourths of the states. The Bill of Rights protects the rights of all citizens.
FIRST AMENDMENT—Freedom of Speech, of the press, and of assembly; right to petition.
SECOND AMENDMENT—Right to keep and bear arms.
THIRD AMENDMENT—Protection from quartering of troops.
FOURTH AMENDMENT—Protection from unreasonable search and seizure.
FIFTH AMENDMENT—Due process, double jeopardy, self-incrimination, eminent domain.
SIXTH AMENDMENT—Trial by jury and rights of the accused, public trial, right to counsel.
SEVENTH AMENDMENT—Civil trial by jury.
EIGHTH AMENDMENT—Prohibition of excessive bail and cruel and unusual punishment.
NINTH AMENDMENT—Protection of rights not specifically enumerated in the Bill of Rights.
TENTH AMENDMENT—Powers of states and people.
In order to uphold these and other rights of humanity, we must step forward and
claim them; if we do not, they shall be taken away and our descendents shall be sold into bondage. Being socially and ecologically aware means taking responsibility for one’s actions, and is an expression of mental and spiritual development. Translated another way, acting with integrity on one’s conscious awareness of cause and effect is the path to evolving spiritually.
In the Light, for the higher good.

SUMMER SOLSTICE 2008
In ancient times the Egyptians designated the Scarab beetle, the symbol of Eternal
Life as the constellation which is the area of the celestial sphere the Sun enters in the third week of the month of June. The winged, black beetle of the Lamellicornia Family is the head of the insect kingdom and considered the Keeper of the Sun. Just as the Scarab guides the Sun across the sky each day, it also maintains the annual cycle, or return of the Sun into perpetuity. The planet Earth’s rotation around the sun expresses a return of Life in Abundance at this time. This is the Summer Solstice.
Later the Crab replaced the Scarab as the backdrop constellation for the Sun’s return to its zenith in the sky at mid-summer. It is here that the sun appears to ‘walk backwards’ because after this point, each day it rises lower on the horizon as the progression of the year continues and it descends the zodiacal arc. Cancer is the sign of generation and in astrological symbolism is ruled by the Moon, which is linked with the life forces of Nature through its power over the tides of the ocean. The Earth is most abundant during this cycle of growth and fertility, and the Maternal Principle is celebrated at this time of year. Gaia, the Earth Mother is most generous in her unconditional Love expressed through the fruitfulness of lifeforms as gifts to sustain all creatures.
Shakespeare illustrates the classic celebration of the mid-summer in his play
A Midsummer Night’s Dream using Greco-Roman icons and Nature Spirits as characters interacting with humans in a lighthearted and enchanted depiction of Love. The King of the Fairies enjoins players and audience alike in parting:
Oberon:
Now until the break of day
Through this house each fairy stray.
To the best bride bed will we,
Which by us shall blessed be,
And the issue there create
Ever shall be fortunate.
So shall all the couples three
Ever true in loving be,
And the blots of nature’s hand
Shall not in their issue stand.
Never mole, harelip, nor scar,
Nor mark prodigious such as are
Despised in nativity
Shall upon their children be.
With this field-dew consecrate
Every fairy take his gait
And each several chamber bless
Through this palace with sweet peace;
And the owner of it blessed
Ever shall in safety rest.
Trip away, make no stay,
Meet me all by break of day.
In all cultures, the Summer Solstice has been a time of gaiety and gratitude for blessings bestowed since time immemorial. It is heralded as the Longest Day of the Year. Midsummer’s Eve is the shortest night in which bonfires, lanterns, dancing and feasting are part of the festivities. Frequently marriages take place on or around this day for the blessings of fertility. In the Celtic tradition the Summer Solstice marks the mid point of the Big Sun season, starting at La Baal Tinne and ending at Lammas.
Hebrews celebrate Shabhu’oth or Shavuot meaning Feast of Weeks which occurs close to Midsummer and in ancient times was a celebration of the Spring Harvest. Throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East this was a most important annual festival. The early Christians continued to revere this season as a time when the Holy Spirit descends upon believers. Metaphorically, this represents the involution of Spirit into material form. Starting at Pentecost and continuing through Summer Solstice individuals commit to belief in Christ and his message of Eternal Life through a ceremonial baptism in water. This signifies the rebirth of Spirit through the Mother, or matter. In the western hemisphere in Incan and north American cultures celebrations with feasting continue for days and nights to honor the Sun God, successful hunting and the gathering of foods. Throughout the Orient, Summer Solstice is a major holiday where an agrarian culture thrives.
In the physical astronomical solar system, the changing of seasons is caused by the Earth’s tilt on its axis as it obits around the sun. The north-south axis is an imaginary straight line through the planet around which the earth revolves
each day. The axis of the earth is tilted at 23.5’ off perfect vertical alignment with reference to the sun as the origin of light. This fact and the spherical form of the globe are two factors creating the variation in seasons.
Solstices occur midway between the Equinoxes throughout each solar year. Each day the earth spins completely on its axis the sun’s rays are most concentrated when they strike the earth’s surface vertically. Depending on the tilt of the axis, either the North Pole tilts toward the sunlight or away from the sun. The rays of the sun are more concentrated either below the earth’s equator in the Southern Hemisphere, or above the earth’s equator in the Northern Hemisphere. Summer Solstice is celebrated by the human population living north of the earth’s
equator when the sun’s apparent path north reaches the Tropic of Cancer in the northern hemisphere. At Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the sun’s rays strike most directly at latitude 23.5’ north of the equator named the Tropic of Cancer,
On the Summer Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere the sun’s rays strike most directly at latitude 23.5’ below the earth’s equator named the Tropic of Capricorn. As the earth orbits around the sun in an annual trek, summer occurs when the respective pole is tilted toward the sun. Simultaneously, winter occurs in the opposite hemisphere as that pole is tilted away from the Sun.
If the earth’s axis were perpendicular to the light rays of the sun, there would be no seasons. Each degree of latitude on the earth would experience the same sort of weather phenomena all year long. Two factors combine to make summer days warmer than winter ones: There are more hours of daylight each day, and the suns
rays are more direct at that location. The concept of latitudes and longitudes is a system of measurement for the purpose of mapping locations on the earth relying
on the sun’s travels through the skies relative to planet.
For long cycles of time, the background constellations appear constant in the annual rotation of the earth around the sun. Summer Solstice takes place as the Sun enters the section of the sky designated as the constellation of Cancer. In 2008 this takes place on the 20th of June. The Full Moon occurs on June 18th in the constellation of Capricorn, in the opposite part of the sky. Venus is conjunct the Sun in Cancer and is therefore not visible during the long hours of daylight. The subtle energies of planets and luminaries have always been acknowledged in the cycles of earthly existence and appreciated for their beauty and power to affect all living things.
The concept that humans should interact with the cycles of time and the changes of the seasons is an ancient one which has sustained populations throughout generations. To mark specific days of the year as Holy Days when special attention and gratitude should be expressed is part of the spiritual legacy of our progenitors, thus linking human beings with the cosmos and the Creator. The Summer Solstice is a time of appreciation for the gift of Life on Earth with all the sensual pleasures and bounty this orb has to offer.
HAPPY CELEBRATION

Enlightenment
Inquisitive by nature,
we all seek to learn.
The lessons of life’s posers,
we find difficult to discern.
Idols are the models,
who help to show the way.
To people who are weak,
despite the image they portray.
Whether it be nobler,
to wear your heart upon your sleeve.
Or pay the price for glory,
one simply must believe.
That God in all his goodness,
gave to each and every heart.
The right to choose a pathway,
through which one can impart.
The promise of eternal life,
lies within the Golden Rule.
For he who loves unselfishly,
will never die a fool!

for health and peace of mind
The basic idea about meditation and why people meditate is that during our day we are constantly subjected to sensory input and our minds are active in the process of thinking to make effective responses. Engaging in conversation, studying written material, solving problems is all part of an average day.
Typically, while engaging in these activities and between them there is an ongoing mental commentary going on in the mind. People aren’t always aware of all that mental thought activity on a conscious level, but most of us can’t get away from it. Meditation allows all this activity to calm and often results in the mind becoming more peaceful and focused.
Meditation allows the opportunity for awareness to become rejuvenated.
Meditation can be considered a technique or a practice. It usually involves concentrating on an object such as a flower, candle, sound or word, or the breath. Over time, random thoughts diminish as the mind is focused on one particular thing. More importantly, the individual’s attachment or emotional involvement with these thoughts progressively becomes less. The meditation subject may get caught up in a thought pattern then becomes aware of this, and attention is gently brought back to the object of concentration. Other forms of meditation are also practiced without a image or object focus as in a posture of complete relaxation.
As experiences in meditation vary from one individual to another, the best attitude is to refrain from having any preconceived expectations when meditating. Being in the moment is an important part of the process. Relaxation, increased awareness, mental clarity, and a sense of peace and harmony are commonly realized through meditation.
The self development process is enhanced through meditation as we become more aware of our feelings and thoughts about daily experiences and interactions. Our sensitivity about personal needs and perhaps unrealistic attitudes or goals may be exposed for the first time and need to be addressed. If silence, peace of mind, clarity, bliss or other promoted benefits of meditation is not achieved, that in itself is not a sign of incorrect practice or incapacity to attain these goals at a later time.
What is important is that one is regular in making a reasonable attempt on a daily basis at a designated time. With regular practice one inevitably acquires an increased understanding of and proficiency with the particular meditation technique. Some people use the formal concentrative meditation as a preliminary step to practicing a mindfulness meditation during the day where one maintains a calm increased awareness of one’s thoughts and actions during the day during activities of any kind.
For some people, meditation is primarily a spiritual practice and may be closely tied to the practice of a religion such as monastic Catholicism, Hinduism Buddhism, Sufism, or other contemplative spiritual expression. . Many people in the world have meditated if only for a few moments by sitting peacefully without thinking, perhaps in a church or at home in silence. Traditionally. meditation is a means for guiding ethical qualities which can then be observed in behavior in a cultural group or society.
This is however, not a requirement for effective meditation. Meditation deals with contacting something within us that is peaceful, calm, rejuvenating and meaningful. Whether one calls this God, or soul, the inner child, or peace, theta-wave brain activity, or simply silence is not important.
Meditation is different from contemplation only in the form of technique practiced. Contemplation suggests a problem solving focus. Meditation is an active process where the subject remains fully aware of what the awareness is doing, but does not become involved in any given solution. It rather attempts to transcend this level of thought activity.
Self-hypnosis like meditation involves at least an initial period of concentration on an object or sound. In hypnosis one does not maintain an awareness of the present or stay conscious of the process itself. One enters a semi-conscious trance for purposes of relaxation only. If a hypnotist is present to act as a guide to the subject, problem solving may occur on subconscious levels and later conscious realization can be obtained.
Meditation involves concentrating on something to take the attention beyond the random thought activity that usually goes on inside the person’s mind. This can involve a solid object or picture, a mantra, rhythm of breathing, or guided visualization. A mandala is a highly colored symmetric painting, or the picture of a spiritual teacher in a high meditative state is used frequently. Mantras are sound which have a flowing, meditative quality and may be repeated out loud or inwardly. The breath is also a common focal point. Guided visualization can help to bring one into a meditative state and also may be used once a meditative state has been reached to produce given results.
Any meditative technique can be helpful, and the person may need to experiment with several before finding the one most compatible and supportive for them. Finding the effective technique or combination for the individual becomes most satisfying, enhancing the life over time. Here are a few recommended guidelines for meditation:
- Set aside a specific time every day
- It should be done before a meal
- A specific quiet, comfortable place should be designated for meditation only.
- Sitting with spine straight and vertical is most often suggested, however, if physical disability causes discomfort, a prone posture with complete symmetrical placement of extremities and alignment of the vertebrae is acceptable. Take care not to fall asleep.
While meditation is beneficial at any time, most people who meditate agree that early morning is best as the clarity of mind, energy, and peaceful attitude can be carried into the activities of the day. Also, meditation is beneficial after a day’s work before supper to clear the tensions of the day. Later in the evening is another appropriate time for meditation. Having at least one time daily to meditate helps to maintain regularity in the lifestyle. Many people find patterned or colored lights, meditative music or regular drum beats aid the process of obtaining a deeper meditative state.
When first learning meditation, 10-15 minutes is adequate. After regular practice, one becomes able to meditate for longer periods of time. Many people meditate twice daily for 20-30 minutes each time. The very experienced person may be able to sustain a blissful state for an hour or more. Although a living teacher is not required and much can be learned through books, beyond elementary levels, guidance is recommended. A teacher can be an invaluable aid in learning a meditation technique and continuing correct practice. Some techniques are spiritual in nature and others are mainly concerned with stress-reduction and peace of mind.
Any aid which works is applicable. The processes used to relax the eyes, the body, and the mind is an individual choice. If muscular discomfort or nerve pain is experienced while reaching a state of relaxation, make sure the position is not causing strain. During meditation, the awareness is heightened and one should expect to notice otherwise ignored sensations. This can be done without attachment and used as objects of the meditation. Frequently, these sensations dissolve without having to change posture. Remember, a quiet body contributes to a quiet mind. What is important is finding what works in the life of the person.

March 13th, 2008 Metempyrion
In many cultures around the planet, the Vernal Equinox symbolizes new life. The return to life after the dormancy of the winter months is seen in the growing cycles of plants, crops, and livestock. The Agrarian societies have long celebrated this time when the day and the night equally share the 24 hour day of the earth.
This transition between winter and summer in the northern hemisphere occurs as the northern polar planetary axis of the earth begins to tilt towards the sun on its elliptical orbit around the Sun. At both equinoxes, Vernal and Autumnal, the Sun appears directly over the Equator of Earth, therefore spending equal amounts of time in both hemispheres during a 24 hour cycle; 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness.
Over ages of time, religions have incorporated this important time of renewal into the doctrines of faith for the populace. Ancient cultures existing today, including the Hopi celebrate this time with prayers and festivals. Purim, Passover, Easter, all are celebrated in relationship with the Vernal Equinox, traditional planting, lunar cycles and associated historic events. Many of these last for days.
For several thousands of years, the star constellation Aries has been the backdrop for the Sun to appear on the first day of Spring. This year, 2008, the Vernal Equinox or when the Sun enters Aries, will begin late on the 19th of March and progress around the globe during the early hours of the 20th.
Prayers for World Peace are traditionally made around the globe at this time. People of all religions and ideologies gather together to share in these expressions of gratitude and harmony among the peoples of the Earth. Global participation on an intentional level has been influential in the progress of spiritual evolution over time. We ask that all people who are inclined, join with others in prayer during this period. Some groups are selecting 8 PM local time on the 20th 21st and 22nd of March.
The Solstices and Equinoxes are designated by the seasons as they have occurred for thousands of years. They are landmarks in the cycles of life on Planet Earth and for that reason human beings have always acknowledged these changes of seasons. Each brings particular bountiful gifts bestowed by the planet, which can be harvested and continue the prosperity of humans. Without these cycles of renewal and bestowal, crops, fish and animals would cease to exist and so would the human population which relies on these for nourishment, shelter, and apparel.
Other dates for gatherings and Prayers for Peace are Summer Solstice when the Sun enters the constellation Cancer, the 20th of June, Autumn Equinox when the Sun enters Libra the 22nd of September, and December 21st, Winter Solstice when the Sun enters the constellation Capricorn.
The differences in cultural and religious expressions on the planet at this time have caused confusion as to the divine purpose for souls to be on Planet Earth. Nationality and loyalty to specific spiritual leaders have distorted the intention of the concept of Universality, or All One Humanity which is the reality.
The spiritual evolution of individuals and the collective is dependent upon realization of this truth. In each person is the potential for Tolerance, Love, and Compassion. The act of praying for ones own ability to comprehend this responsibility intentionally is the foundation for growth in the Light. Prayers must then be acted out through manifested behavior for the soul to evolve. That is the reason for investment into a physical body on this plane. Without this opportunity, the soul could not develop these skills through experience. This is required as a stage of development in the journey of the soul.
To make the connection between prayers of peace, and the living present on the Earth, it is recommended that focus of intention on particular areas which are currently in need, be included at the Vernal Equinox gatherings. Tibet which has suffered occupation by the military Chinese for over 50 years is one such place. Another is Iraq where the civilian population has suffered military aggression by the United States of America which could have been directed specifically to terrorist organizations worldwide. There are other situations which are worthy to be included in prayer, and the selection of focus, as the style of gathering, are of free will choice.
Simple offerings, lighting candles, gathering with family and friends, feasting, and making prayers for peace are all typically associated with the Vernal Equinox celebration. Choose your manner of participation and take the time to reflect on all these wondrous matters. The expression of gratitude for blessings bestowed as the precious cycles of the earth replenish us is ancient. The compassionate recognition of those less fortunate and prayers for release from hardship is appropriate this Vernal Equinox season. Many faiths have rituals which include prayers for this occasion.
Other prayers Suggested:
The Great Invocation
“From the point of Light within the Mind of God let light stream
forth into the minds of men. Let Light descend on Earth.
From the point of Love within the Heart of God, Let love stream
into the hearts of men. May Christ return to Earth.
From the centre where the Will of God is known let purpose
guide the little wills of men – the purpose which the Masters
know and serve.
From the centre which we call the race of men let the Plan of Love
and Light work out. And may it seal the door where evil dwells.
Let Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth.”
Universal Prayer for Peace
“We call upon the Light of the Father to cast out all agents of chaos.
We call upon the Love of the Mother to heal all anger and fear.
We call upon the Powers of Light to unite the nations of the World.
We call upon the Forces of Light to restore balance on Earth.
We call upon all Children of Light to come forward in the work for Peace.
Light, Love, Unity, Balance, Peace – So let it be for Eternity.”

The memories a person holds of family members they interacted with in the past are happenings that can be shared with a clan or a group, and in that way recounted over and over again down through time. Sometimes people feel the presence of entities that used to be alive in a place, and may choose to try to communicate with ‘ghosts’. Storytelling began in this way, the incidents and adventures perhaps being embellished by descendents. A sensitive person may hear or see spirits. Members of the family may suggest that after listening to stories of people no longer living, the person’s imagination was activated. Some people would suggest that ancestor spirits are memories.
Ancestor Spirits are entities that are linked to the living through genetic memory. Because of the common genes carried in a family, ties on a physical, subcellular level can not be destroyed as long as they are passed down through generations. If a gene is discarded by nature in the creation of a unique human being, that person will not carry the gene, and therefore will not be able to access the memory. Denial of a memory can cause serious harm to the psyche of an individual on a deep level. In a collective group the consequences of the loss or denial of racial memories can be devastating. Even if memories of actions by ancestors in the past are frightening or sad, they should be acknowledged. Then healing can begin.
Some genes are survival oriented and basic to the reproduction of fully functional life-forms. Others are necessary to the continuity of stored ‘memories’ defining the orientation of a collective group, relative to the cosmos. Knowledge available in the past may have been lost due to premature discontinuation of a line of carriers through war or some catastrophic event. Ancestral memories may begin to surface long after the genes were initially formed. Through time, combinations are restructured, and memories may blend to form new information or converge to recapture that which was lost. Much information that is genetically coded may take eons of time through generations before it can be deciphered.
Because of a short lifespan of one hundred years or less, Homo sapiens does not have the foresight required to ordain which genes should be discarded and which should be retained over generations. The only exceptions would be obvious disease or deformity in a specific case. Mass destruction of separate populations by arbitrary selection, through a false sense of superiority of one group over another, can only bring annihilation of the species over time.
Spiritual and emotional evolution of Homo sapiens have been retarded over time by the common misconception that some groups are not valuable to the gene-pool of the whole. This shortsightedness has caused a tearing away of valuable information time and time again, slowing natural processes of development toward global unity and enlightenment.
Intuitional skills can enhance the recall of history through genetic memory even though any physical evidence or remains of a culture or family may not be found. Ancestor Spirits can be called upon to act as guides on an inner journey in self discovery. There are many prayers and invocations used across the planet to attract such spirits and thereby to have access to a more clear understanding of time and destiny. An ancestor spirit is an identifiable collection of energy patterns attributed to a specific personality soul. If a ‘soul’ is remembered or called upon repeatedly over generations of time, this energy may remain available to members of a clan or extended family group.
Even though it is disincarnate or without physical form, a strong personality can have an effect on actions of living people. This is not always a good influence and precautions should be taken before invoking an unfamiliar entity. Frequently, it is to the advantage of the Ancestor Spirits to give helpful guidance to their descendents. Therefore a living human being who is trained and practiced in the art of recognizing ‘souls’, is most suited to communicate with beings from other dimensions. Through ages of time, persons with extended sight and other abilities have been designated by their community to fill the role and take on the task of ‘walking between dimensions’ to bring back wisdom and guidance from souls who are no longer in the body.
Frequently Ancestor Spirits attach themselves to a descendent for whom they have an affinity or one who can hear or see them. As the descendent can recognize the ancestor through genetic memory, so the ancestor spirit is drawn to familiar genetic vibrations of a living descendent. A symbiotic bond is created when needs of both beings are satisfied in the relationship. An ancestor spirit may choose to be a Guardian or Protector for an individual throughout the lifetime. At the end of one lifetime, the power of the connection may pass to a chosen descendent. A being long since passed out of the physical body can be elevated in the collective mind of a group and invoked for direction and strength for generations. Traditionally these Beings are called Ancestor Spirits. In some cultures as remembered role models these Beings are considered heroes of old, spiritual leaders and even ‘gods’.
Caution: Not all spirits have the welfare of humans as a priority. Some souls of the deceased may have destructive intent. A Spirit Healer should be called in to sever all ties with discarnates of any kind which are causing harm to the individual, or through the individual to others. Consequently, care should be taken. In actions or health of an individual, the realm of spiritual influence must be considered. If abhorrent behavior is expressed, corrective action must be taken for the welfare of the population at large. Sometimes powerful measures must be taken and strength, integrity, and specific knowledge are required.
Prayers and affirmations along with rituals are most effective in casting out unwanted energies and drawing in well-meaning, helpful Ancestor Spirits.
This concept is an ancient one and has served groups of human beings as a foundation of belonging on the Planet Earth since the beginning of habitation.
Excerpt from the Ancestor Spirits Monologue, 1980 c.e.
